Hernando Garcia met Dr. Fernando Ramos Neyra, Director of Hospital emergencies Pediatricas in Lima, Peru in 2003, and it was agreed that D&WT would remodel two outdated emergency rooms built in the 1960´s. Both rooms were in such disrepair that monies raised with recyclables over the last year were used towards the installation of a new ceiling, floor and walls. What a difference it made and families commented on how much “happier” the rooms made them feel.
The total remodeling costs were $1,400.00, so there was money leftover which was used towards the purchase of school supplies and other personal items (paper, pencils, rulers etc.) for a local orphanage called Puericultorio Perez Aranibal. It took approximately 42,000 cans to accomplish our mission.
